TFGBV Taxonomy

About

This site is an interactive taxonomy — a guide to name, understand, and build toward solutions for technology-facilitated gender-based violence. Its aim is to serve policymakers, product-managers, and platform executives by mapping abuse patterns, impacts, and recommended interventions.

It is currently a prototype, with active collection of feedback from industry, civil society, academia, and the public before its formal launch.

This site is a project of the Humane Intelligence, a tech nonprofit building a community of practice around algorithmic evaluations. It is intended as a wiki - a living document that can be edited and improved by anyone. While it is maintained and edited by Humane Intelligence, it is open to contributions from anyone.

We are well aware that translating this taxonomy into other languages needs to be done, and are looking for partners who speak the language to ensure the accuracy and efficacy of the translated material.

The project was started in January of 2025, and largely borrows the structure of the Integrity Institute’s Focus on Features. Both were developed by Grady Ward. The primary authors of the content are Gabe Freeman, Dhanya Lakshmi, and Sarah Amos.

We also received support from experts who graciously contributed to this taxonomy. These are, in alphabetical order:

  • Eva Blum-Dumontet from Chayn
  • Dr Nikolaos Koukopoulos from UCL Computer Science, Gender and Tech Research Lab
  • Sophie Mortimer from SWGfL
  • Sarah O'Connell
  • Mikayla Pang Zi Rui
  • Nabeelah Shabbir from International Center for Journalists (ICFJ)
  • Dr Leonie Maria Tanczer from UCL Computer Science, Gender and Tech Research Lab
  • Elodie Vialle
  • Jen Weedon
  • And other experts who preferred to stay anonymous.
