Rights violations, Civil liberties infringement, Fundamental freedoms violation
Examples
Smart home device surveillance that violates privacy rights (Tanczer et al., 2018)
Doxxing that forces victims into hiding and restricts their freedom of movement and association
Nation-state run campaigns to silence journalists or activists, violating freedom of expression
Description
This impact encompasses violations of both fundamental human rights recognized internationally and legal rights enshrined in national law. TFGBV often exploits legal gaps where traditional rights frameworks haven't adapted to digital contexts.
These violations can be immediate (privacy breach through doxxing) or cumulative (gradual erosion of freedom of expression through sustained harassment). The digital nature of these violations often makes them more persistent and harder to remedy than offline rights violations.
